[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW]

Out 1 (Jacques Rivette, 1971)

CINEMA ON FIRE: THE IMPURE FILMS OF MARGUERITE DURAS AND JACQUES RIVETTE

Gastsprekers (voertaal: Nederlands/Engels)
Haar blog LAUGH MOTEL (“on, with, around film”) is te vinden op: https://laughmotel.wordpress.com/.
They Live by Night (Nicholas Ray, 1948)

NICHOLAS RAY: CONTACT ZONES

CINEMA ON FIRE: THE IMPURE FILMS OF MARGUERITE DURAS AND JACQUES RIVETTE

Marguerite Duras’s and Jacques Rivette’s most important work is sandwiched between two moments in French film history that were emulated worldwide: the Nouvelle Vague of the 1960s on the one hand, and the Cinéma du look of the 1980s on the other. The oeuvre Duras and Rivette put together in the 1970s is therefore a very special and little-explored chapter in (French) film history. Both filmmakers’ work was characterized by a paradox that is typical of the period: their films wanted to be art and at the same time anti-art (anti-establishment, anti-bourgeois).  ZFC 2021 celebrates the extremely innovative way in which Duras and Rivette rethought and reshaped the legacy of their predecessors while also introducing completely new ideas about the symbiosis between literature, theatre and cinema in order to create a body of work that is much more passionate than is often conveniently assumed.

NICHOLAS RAY: CONTACT ZONES

In a review in Cahiers du Cinéma of Nicholas Ray’s Bitter Victory (1958), Jean-Luc Godard could not stop himself from exclaiming: “The cinema is Nicholas Ray!” The appreciation that the soon-to-be protagonists of the impending Nouvelle Vague felt for Ray seemed endless; they saw in him a poet of modern (American) life. Ray is pre-eminently the cinematographer of photogénie, the unique cinematic moment that carries our imagination beyond what we simply see, and—more than in mise-en-scène—is contained in a glance, a seemingly careless movement, a touch. Contact and intimacy are of paramount importance to Ray, both personally and (inter)culturally. ZFC 2021 highlights how, for 30 years, Ray searched for balance—on a personal, professional, thematic and formal level—and for the right way to bring together poses,  facial expressions, voices and  camera angles to create a shared and at the same time very personal, sometimes autobiographical, cinema.
